Should cash-haemorrhaging car park be sold?

Applause, along with some laughter, filled the council chamber, when a Cheshire East councillor posed the question.

Cllr Reg Kain (Alsager, Lib Dem) had enquired if Cheshire East would also be selling off Crewe’s loss-making £11 million multi-storey car park whilst disposing of surplus assets to help the council’s finances.

Cllr Kain responded at the full council when it was revealed the cash-haemorrhaging  car park has cost Cheshire East approximately £87,000 to operate and brought in just £17,244 in parking income in its first six months.

Cllr Kain said: “If we’re selling off assets, will we be selling off the £11 million car park in Crewe? It’s losing £67,000 this year. A simple question. If we’re going to sell assets, shouldn’t we be selling the loss-making ones as well as the surplus ones?”

There was no response to Cllr Kain’s comment.
